Wednesday March 9
Morning Report
This is the first of two winter-like weather systems we get this week. Rain has developed, and it will be heavy. Especially in southern Maryland where over 1 inch may fall. Near Baltimore you might see some flakes mixing in, but the better chance will be in the inland suburbs north/west.
West on I-68 there will be stickage in Garrett County.
Traveling to PA may be an issue, especially along and north of the Turnpike (I-76). If you go north on I-81 there will be stickage on mountain roads.
Headlines
- Today: Chilly Rain
- North and West: Mixing with more snow
- Saturday: Larger Storm/Falling Temps/Rain To Snow
Morning Surface Weather
Doppler Radar Snapshot
The wintry mix seems to be developing around Hagerstown/Frederick/Westminster… It’s nearby if not in those cities yet.
We are in the window for the wintry mix to expand through 9 AM.
Who Will See Snow?
- Yes: The typical colder zone west and north of Baltimore.
- Some Mixing: Baltimore Beltway I expect some mixing for an hour or two. Some slushy coating on grass, landscaping and car tops.
- By The Bay & Near Annapolis: Very little mixing to just all rain.
- Western Maryland: Plenty of snow! Stickage and Moderate Accumulation
- Near the PA Line: Snow for a few hours. Some coating the grass up to 1 inch.
- PA: North of I-76 a better chance for roads to get coated.
- I-81 North of Fort Indiantown Gap may have rough travel though noon. Same up towards the Poconos north of Allentown.
Morning Temperatures
As we have been saying, we are above freeing, so no road worries locally. Western Maryland will get stickage, and watch for the mountains of central PA.

New Freezing temps will allow stickage in:

Looking Ahead: Saturday Snow?
If you are comparing to your weather app, there is a reason it is showing 50s for high temps. That will be in the morning!
Rain To Snow
This is the influence of the polar air… But with snow falling during the afternoon the warmer ground and higher sun angle will likely mean pavement stays wet.
We will need to watch higher elevations for some possible stickage and ice at night.

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:
I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell. I didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.
All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.
I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…
It’s part of my charm.
