Grade My Forecast Fro Snow January 20: What Worked And Was Wrong

grade my forecast
snow report

Friday January 21 2022

The arctic front that arrived yesterday (Thursday) morning was a small event that created a big hassle simply because of the timing. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for our region with the expectation of rain changing to snow during the morning commute. The potential impact on schools led to a lot of anxiety, and many schools closed.

This post will highlight parts of my forecast, compared with the results.  There is a Poll to Grade My Forecast, and I am aware it may not be good. I’m OK with that as nothing and no one is perfect. The purpose of this exercise is to let you vent AND help me continue to learn form each event. That’s why I’ve been asking for Grades for the past 12 years. I take each opportunity to see how my messaging was and if there can be any improvement.

What Happened?

The cold air was delayed by up to 2 hours, thanks to the wave of Low Pressure on the front forming a little farther east.

The north zones got snow to stick. The south zones got their snow in the afternoon and evening as expected. But the big cities had snow develop too late with no impact on roads.

Late Day Snow Radar

Southern Maryland and Delmarva got snow later in the day and into the evening.

My Forecast Notes

I shared these in multiple reports before the event. I am more aware now of the few typos I have had. I will work on limiting them during my rush in future events.

I annotated what worked in yellow, and what was wrong in red.

TIMING

TRAVEL

This may be the biggest debate!  I suggested schools would delay. That would have been prudent, then reevaluate. However, most schools closed in anticipation of icing on roads. That did not happen… and many schools are now out of snow days, or getting close.

*It may be possible that they had to make the final call before we knew the roads would not ice up.  That’s the only explanation that may serve as some salvation.

AFTER grading my in the Poll, please go back to my social media post where you found this and share your thoughts.

About the Flights…

If you missed out social media posts, my wife was flying out for work and I got her to leave extra early. I did my best to make up for it 🙂
