January 20 Weather Bitter Cold Wind Chills For Ravens Playoff Game

Saturday Morning Update

With two overachieving snow events this week, the fresh blanket has provided support for the arctic air to settle in. Strong winds will continue to flow and might even bring flurries or a snow shower at times. This is the day that will feature The Ravens home playoff football game in Baltimore at 4:30 PM.

My son and I will join over 70,000 people at the stadium for the game, and it will be painfully cold. I have the expected temps and wind chills below. The suggestion I want to pass along now for anyone going:

We will be wearing our snowboarding gear! Seriously: Pants, Jackets, lots of layers, pocket warmers, gloves, hats to cover ears, but regular boots with thick socks. Officials have said blankets can be brought in, and we will carry one. We may use it for the cold seats. Not sure yet.

After today, we will slowly modify our weather with mild temps ahead of the next storm that will bring two days of rain. Winter is not done. This will be the climatological January Thaw. More cold and snow can be expected in the second half of winter.

Snow Report

I will have a region-wide storm recap with local totals in my next report later this morning. Here is the official report for Baltimore, which is nearly 50% of a normal seasonal total!

BWI Airport

  • 4.2” Snow on Friday
  • 9.1” Snow For The Season
  • 5” Snow On the Ground!

Live Radar Widget

This is NOT in winter mode but will help show flurries and snow showers that continue to attempt to push into central Maryland.

Heavier snow with additional accumulation will fall over Western Maryland!

Winter Storm Warning: Still For Garrett County

The bulk of snow has already fallen, but an additional 2 to 4 inches are possible today!

Snow Photo

Thanks to A. Eiswert for showing off the deep snowpack. There is at least 2 Ft on the ground and more has been falling since this photo was taken.

Ravens Game Weather

This will apply to everyone for the day and evening, but I have a personal bias to focus on Baltimore and the game conditions.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.  There has been no editor who can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
