Monday Update
It is not always weather that gets blamed. Artemis 1 had 2 problems with Engine 3. This is the simplified reason for the delay of the rocket launch this morning. One, Two, Three.
This morning the highly anticipated new phase for NASA and the inaugural mission to The Moon was put on pause. Hang on, it will still happen. If all goes well, perhaps even this week.
The short story on the two issues with Engine 3 is that at first there was a leak in the fueling. There is such high pressure in the fueling process of liquid Hydrogen to get it in as fast as possible and keep it cold (-252.87ºC) to then use while still cold. The leak was minor, and when the pressure was lowered, it took longer. Then the engine is prepared to a temperature so the components will not be shocked. The engine did not reach the required range due to a faulty vent.
Official ‘SCRUB’ Announcement
The launch of #Artemis I is no longer happening today as teams work through an issue with an engine bleed. Teams will continue to gather data, and we will keep you posted on the timing of the next launch attempt. https://t.co/tQ0lp6Ruhv pic.twitter.com/u6Uiim2mom

Artemis Fun Facts
Right now it is the biggest and most powerful rocket to date. Space X’s Starship is aiming to surpass it though.
ROCKET
- Artemis is the name of the mission to the moon.
- SLS stands for Space Launch System
Boosters
- White cylinders on the side.
- They are 17 stories high!
- Each one = power/thrust of 14 four engine jumbo commercial airliners.
Core Stage
- This is the orange cylinder. This is 212 Feet Tall!
- For the launch: This will be filled with 537,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and 196,000 gallons of liquid oxygen.
Orion
- This is the capsule at the top of the rocket. This is where people will ride in future missions.
- Three mannequins are strapped in to seats for this mission.
Among thousands of other momentos on board:
- Girl Scout badges, LEGO minifigures, tree seeds, and Snoopy!
- Snoopy As Zero Gravity Indicator
- A plush animal will be tethered to show zero gravity
I’m pretty sure this will be a HOT Christmas gift this year.

Snoopy is going to space! He will be aboard the @NASA_Orion spacecraft as the zero-gravity indicator set to launch August 29. Check out this video to learn more about this special journey! @NASAArtemis #Artemis #SnoopyInSpace pic.twitter.com/xe53KFJ0is

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:
I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
I do miss mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.
All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.
I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…
It’s part of my charm.
