The biggest thing for NASA in 50 years is about to take off Monday morning, weather permitting. The buzz about Artemis 1 is because this is using the largest rocket NASA has ever launched and the first set to reach the moon since 1972.
I have a list of fun facts below and NASA videos explaining the mission below.
At the bottom of this post are live widgets and a player to view the launch Live from NASA Monday morning.
Mission: Fly 280,000 miles to The Moon, then 40,000 miles beyond the far side, then back to Earth safely in 6 weeks.
This Artemis mission is a test flight of the SLS Rocket and Orion Capsule (more on them below). This first flight with be without a crew, and set to stress the system beyond what is needed. This should pave the wave for humans to go on future missions to the moon within the next three years.
In 1972, Apollo 17 crew landed for 3 days. That was the final mission of that program. The goal now with Artemis is to eventually stay there and set up a base. This will include looking for water, other resources, and helping deeper space missions including going to Mars.
Lightning Struck 5 times this weekend
Weather has always been a sensitive factor to allow a rocket to launch. This past weekend, the site has been struck by lightning 5 times. The photos have been impressive, but they are designed to handle this. The weather should be better on Monday morning, and I have tracking widgets below.
Mission Launch Dates:
- Artemis 1 – 8:33 AM opens a 2 hour launch window
- Artemis 2 – No Earlier Than 2024. Humans will orbit around the moon, farther than any human has travelled before.
- Artemis 3 – 2025 – Humans will land on the moon… AGAIN!

Artemis Fun Facts
Right now it is the biggest and most powerful rocket to date. Space X’s Starship is aiming to surpass it though.
ROCKET
- Artemis is the name of the mission to the moon.
- SLS stands for Space Launch System
Boosters
- White cylinders on the side.
- They are 17 stories high!
- Each one = power/thrust of 14 four engine jumbo commercial airliners.
Core Stage
- This is the orange cylinder. This is 212 Feet Tall!
- For the launch: This will be filled with 537,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and 196,000 gallons of liquid oxygen.
Orion
- This is the capsule at the top of the rocket. This is where people will ride in future missions.
- Three mannequins are strapped in to seats for this mission.
Among thousands of other momentos on board:
- Girl Scout badges, LEGO minifigures, tree seeds, and Snoopy!
- Snoopy As Zero Gravity Indicator
- A plush animal will be tethered to show zero gravity
I’m pretty sure this will be a HOT Christmas gift this year.

Snoopy is going to space! He will be aboard the @NASA_Orion spacecraft as the zero-gravity indicator set to launch August 29. Check out this video to learn more about this special journey! @NASAArtemis #Artemis #SnoopyInSpace pic.twitter.com/xe53KFJ0is

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:
I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
I do miss mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.
All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.
I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…
It’s part of my charm.
