January 28 Rain Showers For AFC Championship Game And Reality Weather Check
January 28 2024
Sunday Morning Update
Last week, we had two snowstorms and bitter cold. This week, the two days of warmer weather were quite a flip, with a day in the upper 70s AND very thick fog that led to numerous traffic accidents.
The latest storm that moved in overnight brought rain with a range of 1 to 2 inches, some local flooding, and a return to reality as temps have settled into the 40s. Heavy rain is moving north this morning, but we are not done yet… Now we look to the big event this afternoon:
The AFC Championship Game in Baltimore will be chilly, and more rain showers are expected to return. The potential for snow tonight looks limited and maybe even an afterthought. But we could have some flurries or snow showers mid-week.
In Case You Missed This…
An incredible optical illusion of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Thursday. The fog made it appear as if the bridge was sinking into the water. This was two days before the major accident that shut the bridge down for much of Saturday.

Morning Surface Weather
The overnight rain is moving to our north, but the upper-level energy located in the mountains will pivot through this afternoon and evening. So, while we get some dry hours for tailgaters ahead of the game, there will be more rain showers at times during the game itself. I would still dress in waterproof clothing to stay dry.

A short wave, or small quick-moving system, will move through on Wednesday. This will drop to our south and may tap into the cooler air to produce some flurries or snow showers.

Temperatures
Inland areas may be near or below freezing. I do not expect this to be a major player, but worth watching for any minor impacts.
7 Day Outlook
Back to seasonal temperatures and mostly a quiet week. The chance of flurries or snow showers on Wednesday morning will be slight. Then rain showers at the end of the week.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
