August 31 Drop In Humidity And Tropics Going For A Record Today
August 31 2022
Wednesday Morning Update
The cold front that moved through yesterday did flare up with some destructive storms just east of Baltimore. That front is now off the coast, and we are in a new air mass, however not truly feeling the benefit yet.
Gradually today there will be less humid air flowing it. It will remain warm, but feel less humid this afternoon.
Temps will stay warm, and heat up again this weekend. However, we are in another dry stretch.
Also watching the tropical Atlantic. There is some activity, but it is going to take some time to generate. Today will tie one record in the Atlantic, and we are a few days away from a second record.
Morning Surface Weather
The new air mass is still warm, but less humid. We will feel the benefits this afternoon.

Atlantic Tropical Record
At the end of today, we will end the month of August with NO NAMED TROPICAL STORMS in the Atlantic. This will mark the 3rd time on record this has happened.
Augusts With No Named Storms
- 1961
- 1997
Other Record In Sight- Longest Gap Between Named Cyclones
The record was set at 61 days in 1999. If the Atlantic remains storm-free until September 3rd, then this will be declared the longest mid season drought on record. If we do get something named before then, this will rank as second place.
- 1999
National Hurricane Center Outlooks
Next 2 Days
There is a 60% chance of formation by Friday.
Next 5 Days
There is an 80% chance of formation by September 5.
The next record would be the longest GAP between named storms. The mark will be broken on September 3rd.

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:
I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
I do miss mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.
All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.
I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…
It’s part of my charm.
