Sunday January 2 2022
The National Weather Service has issued their Alerts for the snowstorm on Monday. In this report I included the latest HRRR Model in slider form. This will be easier to control and see the timeline at your discretion.
There are a few things I think should be addressed with the storm that is important beyond just the totals:
- Most metro ares will have impact before the morning commute.
- Temps will be falling in to the 20s, and remain there into the afternoon. Snow will stick, and what starts wet can turn icy.
- Winds will be gusting 25 to 35 mph for may, with stronger winds on Delmarva.
- Wind chills will be dropping in to the teens
- There will be blowing snow in addition to the heave snow zones getting 1”/Hr rates.
I will address these in maps below.
My goal is to get into the storm dynamics in my report tonight.
Winter Storm Warning And Winter Weather Advisory
This is following the logic I discussed in my earlier reports:
A sharp cutoff on the northern edge. Southern PA is not included, but still may get snow for a few hours.
Winter Storm Warning: NWS is calling 3 to 7 inches of snow. EXPIRES BY 4 PM for most of the region. A little later in southern Maryland.
Winter Weather Advisory:
- North: NWS is calling 1 to 3 inches of snow. EXPIRES BY 1 PM
- Beaches: NWS is calling 2 to 4 inches of snow… Delaying the change over and stickage a few hours. EXPIRES BY 11 PM
European Model Snapshot
This model may be the gold standard but it is not perfect. However, I wanted to show this for you to compare to the HRRR Model for the purpose of:
How far north the impact snow will fall
Southern zones that start with rain or mix, then change to snow.

High End (Maryland): 10% Chance
Wind Forecast
The winds will be strong, helping to pull in the cold air AND blow snow around. Especially near the Bay and across Delmarva later.
May will have gusts 25 to 35 mph, with some higher surges on Delmarva and by the beaches.
Temperatures and Wind Chill
Monday Morning
The Freezing Line will pushing across Southern Maryland to Lower Eastern Shore.
Monday Afternoon
Very cold air will remain across the region throughout the day.
Wind Chill
With winds gusting 25 to 35 + mph, the arctic air will feel like the teens. In addition there may be blowing snow and drifting snow, recovering roads.
Tuesday Morning
This seems a bit excessive, but the GFS is trying to allow for clearing and fresh snowpack to support the intrusion of arctic air in the single digits.
