Recently the smoke from western wildfires has traveled across higher levels of the atmosphere and reached the Mid Atlantic US. The result was a spectacular enhancement of the sun while rising and setting as the colors were further refracted. Vivid orange and red shades were the scenes for many around Maryland and nearby states.
There was also a sense of confusion because the air has been crisp and cooler, but the hazy sky gives the impression it is hazy and humid. We may have more of this through the weekend, including sunset today.
I put out the request for photos and was overwhelmed with the collection shared. There have been so many, but I narrowed it down to an elite 8 in no particular order.
Mayo Beach from Jimmy Yanchulis
Keymar Maryland from Tara Elizabeth
Paddling at Sunrise
David Sites I believe on the Severn River or nearby waterway in Anne Arundel County
Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Two photos from Laura Elizabeth. I could not decide which one to share, so I had to show you both.
This first one is my favorite with the framing and Heron flying low along the water.
This close up with the solar glow enhancing the support tower of the bridge is also pretty special.
Hagerstown Maryland
He calls himself BigMeat on Twitter. The contrast of the mountains has a different ‘smokey’ feel.
Codorus State Park in Hanover PA
Ellen Meissner captured the reflection ripples on the water and rising steam fog.
Cool and Ken COLD!
Forecast Smoke Maps
Did you see the sunrise this morning? It may not have been as vivid in your location as we see the smoke shining south and west. This will make a return back our way during the day, which should enhance sunset (if not obstructed by clouds.)
Saturday Morning
There may have been some improved air quality looking to the east over the Bay and ocean, but smoke remained aloft inland and across the mountains.
Saturday Evening
The return flow around High Pressure should move the smoke field back our way. Plus, there will be more to the west where the sun is setting. So if we do not have clouds obstructing the view, the sunset is likely to be vivid this evening.
Sunset Time (Baltimore) 7:12 PM
Why this caught my interest in the first place…
Thanks to David Sites who shared this photo during the week. The coloring made me explore why. I was not tracking the smoke aloft, but have been ever since.
