Saturday Morning Christmas Eve Update
The bitter cold and almost unbelievable wind chills brought a record low to Pittsburgh yesterday, but Baltimore just missed the mark. BWI this morning was down to 7ºF, missing the record minimum temperature of 4ºF set in 1983. However, we have a chance for a difference record of the coldest maximum temperature. That was 20ºF back in 1892, and we will be close. So there is a chance this ends up as the coldest Christmas Eve in 130 years!
It is amazing to think we dropped 40 degrees in 24 hours, had multiple areas with wind gusts OVER 60 mph, and not much local snow to show for it. But it feels plenty cold!

Christmas will be calm and cold, but dry. A small chance for a flurry or light snow Monday night to Tuesday, then we warm a lot up through the New Year.

The vorticity in the jet stream shows a spin with potential to bring some light snow or flurries.

The modeling is having trouble handing this. It is a light event, but we still have a small chance to bring a few holiday flakes.
Extended Look: Jet Stream
Here we see the flip from the Deep Trough to a Big Ridge by the end of the week. This extreme change is actually pretty common. Extremes breed extremes. While we will have a mild start to the New Year, I believe the active pattern will turn more wintry again by mid to the second half of January. This was part of my winter outlook.
