Smoke Aloft Forecast To Enhance Colorful Sunsets And Sunrises Into The Weekend
Thursday, September 15, 2022
Have you noticed the sun appearing more orange or red lately? Especially at sunrise or sunset? This morning I got a photo that was exceptional, which led me to dig deeper into the reason and investigate whether we will see it again. I also want to suggest that the sky at midday can give a hint of what we may see in the evening. If you have clearing and it is more milky white instead of blue, then there is smoke present aloft.
Thursday Morning Sunrise in Maryland
Dave Site captured this glorious view of the sun this morning. We may have a few more days to see more.
Sun Times Based On Baltimore
Sunset Today
- 7:14 PM
Friday:
- Sunrise 6:48 AM
- Sunset: 7:13 PM
Saturday
- Sunrise 6:49 AM
Under normal conditions the light will ‘refract’ in the atmosphere and cause those colors to be most visible when low on the horizon.
Now we add smoke from western wildfires into the mix, and we have been ‘treated’ to an enhanced view in the mornings and evenings. I say enhanced, because the smoke is high in the atmosphere, so we should all get to view it for a few days.

This 12 hour forecast shows the smoke aloft between Thursday evening to Friday morning. That cluster of orange shading in the eastern US is circling through, and may get stuck for a few days.
Notice the cluster from the Great Lakes Thursday evening, it will spill into the Mid Atlantic by Friday morning.
Weather Set Up
High Pressure building in is helping to bring that smoke from the Great Lakes into the Mid Atlantic. However the sky overall should be mostly clear at sunset for our region.
The circulation will rotate around and may linger in our region for a few days.
Smoke Forecast: HRRR Model
This shows the thickest smoke layer moving in tonight for Friday morning. Then it will pivot to the west and cycle back through a second time for metro areas Saturday morning.
Friday Morning
Most of the Mid Atlantic should have a clear sunrise with smoke aloft at its thickest. This may provide a stunning orange or red orb (6:48 AM-ish)
Friday Evening
The core smoke may push south into southern Maryland and Virginia…
Saturday Morning
The core smoke is expected to recirculate around High Pressure and pivot back our way. More likely farther inland and across the mountains.
