Monday Afternoon Storms: Radar Update And Simulation Through This Evening

Forecast

August 22 2022

Monday 1 PM Update

Storms have continued to blossom across the region today. Last night and early this morning they were focused mostly in Northeastern Maryland. However, the unstable environment has led to pop-up showers in just about every corner.

There are two parts to the weather story today. First, the showers and thunderstorms this afternoon are scattered with no particular focus. Second, a specific line of storms should be more concentrated as it crosses central Maryland into the evening.

This post has a brief look at the set up, simulation slider, and live radar widget to compare.

Doppler Radar Snapshots

At Monday at 1 PM –

There is very little movement and some cells will include lighting and downpours. This may lead to local flash flooding with rainfall rates over 1/hr (like a few cells have done since yesterday).

Notice this first image is also at 1 PM and MISSING much of the activity. Once again, the short range modeling is underplaying the activity.

The strongest storms may get concentrated in a line that moves through central Maryland between 6 PM and 8 PM.

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:

I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell.  It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

I do miss mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.

All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.

There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.

I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…

It’s part of my charm.
