August 8 Weather Storm Report Plus Nicer Weather And Trek 10 Day 3
August 8, 2023
Tuesday Morning Update
SEVERE STORM RECAP
Thank you for visiting here for my weather report. Local weather is below and I plan to forecasting continue all week, but please note my attention is on Maryland Trek 10. My team began Sunday from the summit of Wisp Ski Resort for our week-long journey to Ocean City.
Before today’s event, I wanted to recap the epic storms from yesterday, which affected our team in the mountains and led to lots of destruction across a broad area.
Storm Report
The NOAA spotters counted 237 wind damage reports, plus 21 hail reports. This included 12 reports of significant hail over 1 inch.
Record Hail Stone in VA?
Peter Forister is a storm chaser I am friends with, so this is a legit report. He initially stated measuring 4.5-inch hail in Port Royal, VA. The follow-up was 4.74 inches which if confirmed would be a state record.
Unbelievable hail stones in Port Royal, VA. Potentially holding the VA state record stone here at 4.5”. Awesome chase day with @stormchaserzay @harrythomvi @AlexThorntonWx pic.twitter.com/UulOxpmGnG

Westminster Damage
This string of power lines came down on Rt 140 and 97. Looking at the fall in the same direction, it was most likely straight-line winds or a microburst.

Maryland Trek 10 Day 2
I would love to show you the video recap of Day 2 that our media team produced. Facebook is not allowing me to embed it here, so please click on the image to view it on my FB page.
Maryland Trek 10 Day 3
This morning we begin in Hancock for Isla. We may be treated by her family in Baker Park in Frederick for our finish.
We are honoring a kid in cancer treatment each day and raising money for our free programs at Just In Power Kids. As of this morning, we have already raised over $72,000 towards our goal of $140,000+.
Today’s Power Kid is Isla. We will be live with her family beginning between 7: 30 AM and 8 AM on my Facebook Page.
Today’s Route will be 51 miles from Hancock, Maryland to Frederick. We will start with 10 miles by bike along the Western Maryland Rail Trail, then 27 miles on foot to Boonsboro, then bike the rest into Baker Park in downtown Frederick. We aim to be there between 6 PM and 7 PM.
Maryland Trek Week Long Route

Weather Briefing
Morning Surface Weather
The cold front is still trying to clear the Delmarva this morning. What is pushing it is a new air mass that will bring a refreshing breeze, lower temperatures, and lower humidity.
Afternoon Temperatures
Cooler and pleasant. There may be more clouds farther west and in the mountains. We all should feel a cooler breeze with a drop in humidity.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes, and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia, and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing, and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor that can check my work when I needed it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm.
