Forecast

Monday Afternoon April 24 2023

We have definitely broken the early season heat and the atmosphere appears to be overcorrecting with extended colder air.  We are already in the change which will be highlighted by a Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory tonight (inland from the Bay). This is the reason it is often recommended to hold off on planting until after Mother’s Day.

The rest of this week and into next week will remain with sustained colder air, including a few chilly rain events. Unfortunately this includes a rain storm this weekend, so it might be worth considering your plans and have an indoor option.

Let’s dive in:

Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory

Until 8 PM Tuesday April 25

  • Light Blue= Frost Advisory for the closer inland suburbs north and west of Baltimore/Washington.
  • Dark Blue = Freeze Warning farther inland from Carroll County, MD.

Forecast Temperatures Tuesday Morning

Note: Frost can occur with light wind and when weather stations report temps in the 30s, even above freezing.

Also: The numbers shown represent the reporting stations, but more rural areas can and often get colder.

Afternoon Remaining Cool

For reference, Baltimore may stay at 59ºF compared to the average high of 70ºF.

NOAA OUTLOOK

Here we see Day 6 to 10 with a dominant colder flow for the Eastern US. This is the pattern I and many others had expected to arrive to end winter. This is about 6 to 8 weeks late.

Monday May 1

It may feel more like March… This large upper level Low will lock in a deep trough for the Eastern US. We will likely have another chilly week.

Weekend Storm: Chilly Rain

We will begin with rain arriving on Friday, then a second surge may be the stronger event. This could bring extended and sustained much needed rain through the weekend.

2 PM Friday April 28

The leading edge of two storms will arrive during the day Friday.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos, and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes, and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia, and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing, and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.  There has been no editor that can check my work when I needed it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos, when she is able. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm.
