Wednesday Morning Update

It’s a new month and perhaps a new weather attitude.  This was a hard fought victory, but we had a widespread light snow early this morning that confirmed all the discussions over the last few days. While questioning the computer model guidance, a few models held firm and most finally came in line yesterday.

Just enough of a coating has led to some school delays on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Please check your source to confirm for your district/county.

Central Maryland did get some snow.  One of the first photos I got was from Columbia in Howard County. Thanks Dawn Coxon Colt.

I just wanted to show the areas that likely have a coating.  A little more falling on Maryland’s Eastern Shore has some schools on a delay. It’s worth checking this morning.

PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS

The other concern here has been the falling temps with wet roads. Despite the initial melting, a few hours before sunrise may allow for ice to develop on untreated or elevated surfaces. Dropping salt on your walkway or driveway will help. Let’s hope the roads get treated where needed.

Report At Baltimore’s BWI

Observations from the Automated System ASOS shows snow falling between 2:50 AM and 4:45 AM.

Temperatures holding at 32ºF and may drop a degree by sunrise. This suggests nearby untreated areas could get icy spots before dawn.

All we needed was  1/10 of a inch of snow to be considered measurable and I’m waiting for the observer at BWI to confirm that.  It did happen at nearby Dulles Airport and the National Weather Service was excited about that.

Excitement Shared

If anyone questions the discussions for even a little snow. I posted on Facebook just after 3:30 AM. It was met with hundreds of comments, helping to verify the conditions and fellow love of winter weather.

Latest Measurable Snow In Baltimore

Today Is 3rd Latest

  1. Feb 21 in 1973 (50 years ago)
  2. Feb 6 in 1914 (109 years ago)
  3. FEB 1 in 2023 (Today)
  4. Jan 25 in 1992 ( 31 years ago)
  5. Jan 25 in 1901 ( 122 years ago)
  6. Jan 23 in 1966 (57 years ago)

The 2nd place year was 1914 (109 years ago). To give you some hope, or Faith in the Flakes, I would like to expand on that winter.

72ºF on January 30, 1914 – Record High

Imagine what those people thought that winter?

Well, they broke their snow drought on February 6th, 1914, then made up for lost time!

11.4” Snow fell in February

11.6” Snow fell in March

That season ended with 23 inches, which was above an average winter!

It has happened before, and can happen again.

FITF  – Faith in the Flakes

I am working on the daily forecast now. See you in a bit.
