January 2 A Few Warm Days And Mid Week Rain Showers
January 2, 2023
Tuesday Morning Report
Today is a Federal Holiday, meaning a lot of people get a day off to enjoy yet another spring like afternoon. I am not going to suggest it’s perfect time to take down holiday lights, but it may be hard to get more days like this after mid week.
Some rain will spread into the area Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a return to seasonably cool temps this weekend.
This is NOT the pattern change, as we may get mild again next week. But, the return to winter is inevitable.
Climate Notes:
On Sunday, BWI observed 64ºF for the high, not a record.
Today, while we aim for the 60s again, the record high was 71ºF in 1876 (yes, 147 years ago). We are not likely to challenge that record today.

Note that we often end up warmer than models suggest in patterns like this. However, any wind from the water can hinder temps with natural refrigeration.

Rain Forecast: Radar Simulation
8 AM to 3 PM
The first wave of rain showers will be more likely to the west and north of Baltimore (Frederick to York). There may be some showers around Baltimore briefly mid to late afternoon.
Storm Animation: Wednesday Through Friday
The large storm will be responsible for pumping warmer air in during the week. With that, we eventually get rain showers Tuesday afternoon and evening. This will culminate with heavy rain on Wednesday and perhaps some thunder.
Jet Stream: Through January 15
This is a 2 week outlook, simply for trends. The one that jumps out to me is that after this week, we knock down the ridge in the east but it will take a few more impulses to reestablish winter. It will trend colder in the middle of the month.
My Thoughts:
This return to winter will come in phases. This weekend will be a blip but not the pattern change. I know I continue to point to Friday for some hint of winter, comparing two models trying to produce snow. I still believe the atmosphere will try to do something next weekend, but I doubt it will be impactful. If we get a surprise twist, I will share it.
Otherwise, the real change to winter is more likely for the middle and second half of this month.
7 Day Forecast
This first half of the week will look like spring. After the mid week rain, and even a rumble of thunder on Wednesday, we return closer to average by the weekend.
The snow chance next Friday (for now ) appears to be minimal, but the atmosphere is trying to produce some snow or rain showers over the weekend.
