November 1 Weather Cold With Snow And Freeze Warnings
November 1, 2023
Wednesday Morning Update
Welcome to November. We start this month with cold winds and snow. Yes, the first snow of the season has fallen with stickage on the ground in Garrett County where elevation is 2,000 to 3,000 Feet. I have some pre-dawn photos and live camera below.
Local radar has been lit up with a band of snow between Hagerstown and Frederick. A coating may be on the ground in the Catoctin Ridge, with flurries flying east into Carroll County and maybe southern PA.
A windy and cold day brings in the Wind Chill to pay attention to. When those winds subside tonight, Freeze Warnings and Watches have been issued for much of our area.
Snow In Western Maryland
I want to thank my friends Kim Smith and Sarah Meyers for getting up early to capture these images and sending them.

Cold air is flowing in! Pockets of showers with the instability have produced bands of snow from the Great Lakes into the Mountains. This will continue through the morning.

Thursday Morning
Freeze Watch and Warning
This map represents the different National Weather Service forecast offices following different protocols. It makes things complicated when they do not need to be.
A Watch means it might happen. A Warning means it is expected. I do suspect Central Maryland and Virginia will be upgraded to a Warning at some point today.
Temperatures Thursday Morning
Temperatures Thursday Afternoon
Wind Forecast
The wind will be much lighter (mainly under 10 mph). Despite the chilly temperatures, it will feel a little milder.
Jet Stream
Animation Thursday to Monday
After this cold front passes by, a big warm-up will surge in this weekend and into early next week.
Snapshot Saturday
A nice weekend gets temperatures back above average. The 70s are not done yet. If it does not happen this weekend, we will get there early next week.
7 Day Forecast
The core of the cold air will be Thursday morning. A Freeze Watch/Warning is in place for much of Maryland… A solid warm-up with dry weather is expected through the weekend and into early next week.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm.
