July 14 Very Humid And Afternoon Storms
July 14, 2023
Friday Update
The most noticeable part of the weather is the increasing humidity. I know, it is July and what else would we expect. But we are in the uncomfortable level with a tropical feel, minus the palm trees.
Let’s back up to yesterday for a moment. At Baltimore’s BWI, there were a few times the temperature reached 97ºF on the 50-minute report, but NWS reported an official high of 96ºF. The record was 99ºF set in 1880, 1954, AND 1966.
Today’s temperatures will not be as high, but it will feel like it.
6 AM Temperatures
A true sign of the warmth and humidity in this air mass, check out these temperatures around sunrise.
Baltimore’s BWI was 77ºF.
Around the Bay and Delmarva: Temps are in the mid to upper 70s, even near 80ºF.
Morning Surface Weather
There is a stalled frontal boundary in the mountains. This may be the trigger for some enhanced focus on thunderstorms this afternoon and tomorrow.
Afternoon Temperatures
There has been a wide variety of temperatures among the computer models. I chose the warmest allowing metro areas to touch the 90s given the tendency for our weather stations to run warmer.
Heat Index
Severe Thunderstorm Risk
NOAA has our region in the ‘Marginal’ Risk. There will be some thunderstorms, but the main potential is for damaging winds and locally heavy rain.
Radar Simulation Noon to 9 PM
SUGGESTION: I DO NOT TRUST short-range modeling.
Snapshot Suggestions
HRRR Model – The Most Active
WRF Model – Still Active, slightly different location for storm line.
FV3 Model – The least Active

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes, and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia, and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing, and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor that can check my work when I needed it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos, when she is able. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm.
