Correction: Philadelphia Seismograph Tweet Was Hoax But Something Might Have Still Been Measured
November 2, 2022
There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the Game 3 World Series in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. This game was originally postponed on Halloween due to rain, and the Phillies made up for it with a record 5 home runs in the first 5 innings. That was the first time in World Series history, and gave roughly 45 thousand fans in attendance a great show in their 7-0 victory and series lead of 2 games to 1 over the Astros.
This also provided an opportunity for a great internet hoax. The rug was pulled out from it and I am not happy to report this. But in effort of full disclosure, I will OWN that I was duped with many others. On the bright side, something may have still actually been measured.
Here’s the REAL Deal
I woke up this morning and saw this message shared by two friends I trusted. It was an image of a seismograph claimed to be from Penn State University at Brandywine (there is a real station there) with two measurements of activity corresponding to the first two Phillies home runs last night. The first inning by Bryce Harper, then the other by Alec Bohm.
I was happy to share this with my 12-year-old son at the breakfast table and he suggested I write a story about it. So I rushed to do so after he went to school. I did so, without double-checking…. That is my fault as a Meteorologist/Earth Scientist and website publisher.
We can credit @JeanLucPicard84 on Twitter for this information that got me, and many of us.
I am purposely showing you two versions here, just in case the original Tweet is removed. We were duped! As of this post time, 2,902 Retweets and over 15.6 THOUSAND LIKES. This was a HOAX or Fake News! It made people happy and no harm was done, but it was NOT REAL!
Here is the embedded original tweet
If this is blank, then it was taken down…

Where did it come from?
Thanks to the brilliant internet for catching this, the original image was tracked to an October 25, 2022 San Jose, California earthquake on tracking published in Mercury News.
Did anything significant happen?
Well, @BucksPAWeather did find something less dramatic, relating to a later home run by Schwarber:
So yes it wasn’t an #earthquake but This is the real PSU seismic graph from around the time of Schwarbers HR. @Phillies fans were really rocking tonight. #phillies #WorldSeries #RingTheBell pic.twitter.com/75OeGLRkZA

The Real Pennsylvania State Seismic Network
PASEIS
There is a large network of sensors across the state of Pennsylvania, which includes Brandywine (PSUB) just outside of Philadelphia. That is the one mentioned in the hoax.
You can find a link to that page by clicking this image.
I did pull up the seismogram and highlighted any notable ‘blips’. There is often some ‘noise’ in the data as we can see well after game time. It is possible something was measured correlating to the World Series Game, but not conclusive at this time.

Are we good now? My original post about this has been edited with the correction, but left in place for posterity and hopefully a lesson to double and triple check.
I have a clean conscience now and want to share the rest of my original post for Phillies fans to cherish.
The Game Info and Videos Are Real
Here are those home runs:

Second Inning:
Alec Bohm hit a line drive over the left field wall for his first post season home run. This tweet tells the story and didn’t realize the impact of that noise.

Next Up
Game 4 is tonight and the weather will remain unseasonably mild and pleasant.
If lightning strikes again, it will be from the ground up.
