October 19 Chilly With Mountain Snow Maybe A Flurry NW
October 19 2022
Wednesday Morning Update
The core of the cold air will be with us today and tomorrow. You may notice that temperatures did not drop as cold as expected, meaning the Freeze Warning was premature. That is because of added cloud cover, which in fact may result in a flurry or sprinkle inland.
The snow machine has not fully turned on yet in western Maryland. They have had flurries, but we will watch today for any snow. I’ve included a live web cam at Deep Creek Lake plus Radar below so we can view it here.
Colder air will still stream in through tomorrow, so we may have another round of Freeze Warnings for the same inland areas.
This weekend, a warm up for Saturday, but the European Model is trying to pull in a coastal storm Sunday… We need to consider that for a wet chance.
Morning Surface Weather
The clouds we have building inland are part of this larger circulation. The Great Lakes Low is spinning north of Toronto and helping to bring down more cold air… The next ‘spoke’ will pivot through Maryland today. This will kick off flurries and snow showers for Garrett County today and then allow more substantial snow there through tomorrow.
Satellite Loop 4 AM to 6 AM
Additional clouds have been developing in the mountains and spilling east. This is the result of that upper level energy (vorticity) I’ve shown in prior reports.
Morning Temperatures
Temps are down to Freezing (30ºF) in McHenry and much of the high mountains. While we have areas in the 30s, our Freeze Warning area oddly has warmer temps. This is due to the cloud cover that inhibited the cooling.
Western Maryland Snow?
As of this predawn report, I have not seen much on radar. It doesn’t always show up well. We can expect snow showers to develop today. If steady snow does develop, it is cold enough for some early day stickage.
Live Web Cam: Wisp/Deep Creek Lake
This webcam is positioned at The Greene Turtle Deep Creek Lake and shows Wisp Resort, including a zoomed-in view of Squirrel Cage, The Face, the terrain park, Boulder, the mountain coaster, the tubing park and a shot of McHenry Cove at Deep Creek Lake!
Live Radar Widget
This is NOT a winter mode display. So rain or snow will look the same. Also, light precipitation in the mountains can be under-reported/shown.
Radar Simulation 6 AM to 4 PM
Blue = snow in western Maryland. Here we see is lasting most of the day. That band of snow I showed yesterday is not presented here, however we may still see light showers pop up across the inland suburbs of central Maryland and southern PA.
Afternoon Temperatures
Wind Animation 6 AM to 8 PM
Brisk winds will average between 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. This will make for a blustery day.

Weekend Outlook
A warm start on Saturday will bring us sunshine and temps for many near 70ºF. Here we see the European Model trying to form a coastal Low and pull it inland with rain on Sunday.
The GFS is less robust, but trying to catch up. So we must add this risk into the extended outlook.
