September 9 Another Chilly Start Then Warming And New Tropical Storm May Get Named Today
Monday September 9, 2024
Morning Report
There is quite a contrast in the weather report today. We have just had a weekend with the autumn chill, and it continues today. Yesterday, Baltimore tied a RECORD LOW at BWI with a temperature of 46ºF. The last time that happened on September 8 was in 1962.
As we warm back up to the mid-80s this week, the tropics are heating up as well. A storm with 50 mph winds is getting more organized in the western Gulf of Mexico and is expected to be named Tropic Storm Francine today. It has the potential to become a hurricane and make landfall in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico.
FROST ADVISORY
Light winds and temperatures in the 30s are more impactful across the mountains of Western Maryland and West Virginia.
Morning Temperatures
A lot of areas North of Baltimore are as cold as many reporting stations in the Western Maryland and West Virginia mountains.
There are colder locations in pockets between these reporting sites.
Morning Surface Weather
High Pressure is still in control with a chilly start. This should be the coolest of the stretch. I suggest dressing in layers as the afternoon will be sunny and warmer.
The rain across the coast of Texas is ahead of the new tropical system (see more below).
Afternoon Temperatures
A little warmer than yesterday.

Tropical Atlantic Outlook: 7 Days
This week is the historical peak of hurricane season. Two other potential systems are being watched in the Central Atlantic. If these play out, they do not seem to pose much threat to land (at this time).
Storm Forecast Tuesday to Saturday
The track of what may become Tropical Storm (or hurricane) Francine stays well south and west.
Jet Stream Animation: Monday Through Sunday
Warmer and quieter weather will dominate the week for us. The ridge building in (orange) will block the inland track of the tropical cyclone (blue).
7 Day Forecast
This week, we get a break from both the chill and any rain. We will watch for any adjustments to the tropical storm when it forms, but our region looks calm and pleasant.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
