December Weather Shows Start Of Meteorological Winter With Cold And Snow

December 1, 2024

Sunday Morning Report

Winter cold has arrived early and yet it is right in line with the start of meteorological winter, which is today! The freezing temps have expanded to Texas and even north Florida. The Lake Effect snow continues, and I have a quick look below.

Locally a little clipper may swing through with late day or evening snow or rain showers into central and southern parts of the Chesapeake Bay.

In the coming week, expect another surge of cold air every few days, reinforcing the winter chill and increasing the likelihood of snow showers.

A sample of Sunday morning with 30s all the way into central Texas and Northern Florida.

The core of the cold has brought below zero temps to the Northern Plains.

Morning Surface Weather

Lake Effect Snow is dominating the weather from Northeast Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. This is a very localized and intense event.

There is a broader system bringing moderate snow to the Midwest that will pass through the Mid-Atlantic tomorrow.

Lake Effect Snow Highlights

Here are a few of my posts from yesterday to highlight what has happened. I will follow up on social media today with new totals.

Wall Of Snow

This is a classic scene from downtown Buffalo, watching the edge of the approaching heavy snow band off Lake Erie just to the south.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.

There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
