Morning Report

Today is the first day of the year with sunrise before 6 AM in Baltimore, but we won’t see it. After a high temperature of 85ºF yesterday, many areas will be 15 to 20 degrees cooler this afternoon. Then, it will be even more chilly on Friday as we get locked in with an East wind and periods of rain.

NOAA has posted a Severe Storm Risk potential to include Baltimore, but seeing the chilly temps, I think that risk will be suppressed south and later tonight.

The chance for rain lasts into the weekend through Mother’s Day. Not all will be a washout, but as I show the model simulations below, I want to emphasize that they are suggestions. Timing spring showers is difficult, especially when not in an organized storm.  Just plan for chilly and damp weather for a few days.

Storm Reports Yesterday

This was the 14th day in a row with tornados across the US.

NOAA Severe Storm Risk Today

The Level 2 Slight Risk includes Baltimore, but I believe the cooler air will suppress the real threat farther south. It is also important to note that the timing after dark will limit the potential as well.

Severe Storms are defined as having winds over 58 mph, hail over 1 inch in diameter, and isolated tornados.

Morning Surface Weather

A new air mass has pushed in with East Winds. This will help keep the chill and damp feel to the air.  Rain and storms will be approaching from the West during the day.

THIS IS A SUGGESTION

Periods of rain will develop mid-morning through the evening. The timing shown here is not perfect, but the trend is more important.

Any chance for lightning locally will increase tonight.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.

There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
