January 16 A Chance For Light Snow This Weekend In Different Parts Of Our Region Each Day
Friday January 16
There is a lot to talk about this morning in all directions. The deep freeze has reached Florida, with parts of it in the 20s and snow expected later this weekend.
Snow is falling this morning across the Great Lakes, and we are watching the next arctic push on the move across the Canadian border.
Locally, we will be in the mix with two impulses of energy that will treat our region differently:
Saturday: An early band of snow will move out of the mountains and may drop a coating West and North of Baltimore before 10 AM.
The city and northeastern Maryland may get a slushy snow mid-morning to noon with wet roads, and this will mix and change to rain farther south and east midday and during the afternoon.
Sunday: Places that did not get snow on Saturday will be aligned with a better chance to get in on light snow with the Southern Storm that will move off the coast. Some minor accumulation may affect Southern Maryland and the beaches.
Morning Temperatures
I am showing this wide view to highlight the push of cold air that has reached all the way into Florida. Yes, they are still expecting snow this weekend across the northern part of that state into Southern Georgia.

Morning Surface Weather
For Baltimore and the Mid-Atlantic: Dry and cold this morning as we sit behind the arctic front. The cold air has settled in, but the main event is what’s happening to our north and south.
- Deep Freeze to the South: Unusual cold air has pushed all the way to the Gulf Coast! Florida and the Deep South are experiencing a rare deep freeze — a sign of just how strong this arctic outbreak is.
- Snow to the North: A band of snow is moving across the Upper Midwest from Nebraska through Wisconsin and into the Great Lakes. This system will track toward the Mid-Atlantic and could bring a wintry mix Saturday morning.
- Arctic Air: Another reinforcing shot of arctic air is diving south from Canada through the Dakotas, keeping the cold pattern locked in.

Wind Forecast
The breeze will still be noticeable and also shifting to the South later today.

SATRUDAY
Radar Simulation 5 AM to 7 PM
Brief morning snow could drop a coating West and North of Baltimore before 10 AM.
This will mix and then change to rain farther east. The timing is why no road impact is expected for Baltimore to most of Delmarva.

7 AM Snapshot
Light snow may lay a coating between Hagerstown, Frederick, Westminster, and York/Harrisburg in PA.

10 AM Snapshot
Snow near and north of Baltimore. But temps will be warming above freezing, so any impact may be limited to near the PA line.
A mix to rain south of Baltimore.

Noon Snapshot
Wet snow not sticking on roads across Northern Delmarva, metro Philadelphia, to metro New York.

Weekend Highlights
The ECMWF Model shows the Saturday band of precipitation with more emphasis on light snow, and could be misleading, as we saw above.
The second wave on Sunday will be with Southern Track that affects North Florida to coastal Delmarva.

Snapshot Saturday
Light Snow across the region, most likely from morning to midday, then mild.

Snapshot Sunday
The coastal storm developing may be close enough for light snow on our Eastern Edge across Delmarva, including the coast.
Sunday Close Up
ECMWF Traditional
I feel compelled to stick with the Traditional ECMWF until proven otherwise. Here we see Light Snow or Flurries across Lower Delmarva. Little stickage expected, but could lay a coating by the beach.

ECMWF AI
Note: This is NOT in winter color coding mode.
This version has been pulling the edge of the snow closer to Annapolis and Baltimore. I am still skeptical, but if you see snow on your weather app, this may be part of the reason it is being suggested.

Jet Stream: Sunday Jan 18 to Jan 26
Repeating pulses of arctic air arrive, with maybe a day or two lull in between.

7-Day Forecast
Colder stretch ahead! Tuesday looks like the coldest day with a high of only 26°F and a low of 12°F. Saturday’s morning mix could bring some wintry weather before warming up, and light snow is possible to the east on Sunday.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I can also make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
