September 16 Compact Coastal Storm Brings Gusty Winds And Rain Today: Gale Warning
Tuesday, September 16, 2025
We have another tightly wrapped, small but potent storm along the Mid-Atlantic coast today. This compact coastal system is going to behave like a small tropical storm with winds over 40 mph near the center, but the Low will move inland and it will weaken. A Gale Warning includes the Southern Chesapeake Bay.
This system was first identified last week, and it seems like each day closer has brought this in sooner, stronger, and now farther north than we thought yesterday.
Low Pressure is expected to move inland across the Virginia Tidewater near Norfolk. The strongest winds and heaviest rain will be nearby, including Southern Maryland. Farther north, there will be showers and bands of moderate rain into most areas of Central Maryland.. even Southern Pennsylvania.
We will have two days with this system, including cool winds. Then the sun will return to end the work week.
Weather Warnings
- Note: A Gale Warning has tropical storm strength winds, but this is not a named system. Winds will be over 39 mph across the Southern Chesapeake Bay to the Virginia Tidewater region.
- Small Craft Advisory: Central To Northern Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Coast to New York.
- Flooding is likely where rain will be 2 to 4 inches.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I can also make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
