July 3 A Strong Afternoon Thunderstorm North Then Pleasant Holiday And Tropical Potential Off The Coast This Weekend
Thursday, July 3 2025
Morning Report
We have already started the improvement with a look at the temperatures this morning and the feel of lower humidity. One final piece of energy will swing through this afternoon with a chance of strong to severe storms on the north side of Baltimore to New England.
Then we enter a new weather pattern for the Holiday weekend. The only wrinkle may be tropical development off the southeast US coast. It is a region The National Hurricane Center is watching.
Happy Aphelion Day!
Today at 3:54 PM EDT, Earth will be at the FURTHEST point away from the sun in our orbit. This occurs around this time every year and may seem counterintuitive, considering it is summer and hot. But our orbit is not a circle, and in early July, we are about 3 million miles farther from the sun than we are in early January (perihelion).
This distance does not affect our temperatures… It is the tilt of Earth’s axis that allows for more direct sunlight, which plays the prime role in our seasons.
Morning Temperatures
Morning Surface Weather
Very humid air is in place.
A strong cold front will arrive today with the expected storms.
On the other side, a new air mass with lower humidity will arrive for the holiday.
NOAA Severe Storm Risk
A greater chance to our north, which may affect travel if you are driving north on I-95 into metro New York and New England.

Radar Simulation: Noon to Midnight
This is a SUGGESTION, NOT A PROMISE.
Two lines of storms may try to form, with the stronger one to our north.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
