January 29 High Wind Alerts Today And Needed Rain For Friday
January 29 2025
Wednesday Morning Report
Temperatures remain above average, and now we add in very strong winds. A storm in New England will deepen and force a pressure gradient that will be responsible for very strong winds. The forecast has much of the region with winds over 45 mph. Parts of Central Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania may see 55 mph gusts and 60 mph or higher in the mountains.
The next storm will reach us on Friday with heavy rain… A similar storm track to earlier this month when we got our big snow… but the cold air is lacking this time. We need this rain as our region continues to be in a drought… yes, even with the recent snowfall.
Rainfall Deficit at BWI
- Ending 2024 = -8.00, since Jan 1 = -1.67
- So we are down -9.67 since last year!
Wind Alerts
High Wind Warning: Gusts to 60 mph includes Hagerstown to Cumberland in Maryland, and Winchester in Virginia. Also the mountains east of Garrett County in Maryland.
Wind Advisory: Gusts between 45 and 55 mph for all of Southern Pennsylvania and Central Maryland to the Chesapeake Bay. This also includes I-81 and Skyline Drive in Virginia.
Morning Surface Weather
The storm track of the Low Pressure is heading into Northern New England. Pressure levels are expected to drop to 988 mb, which will create the pressure gradient that will start the wind machine.
The next storm is forming Low Pressure in Texas. It will follow a similar track that brought us snow two weeks ago, but it will lack cold air.

Less rain will fall north. Places along the MD/PA line will still be in line for over 1/2 inch of rain.
ECMWF
The European Model has lowered the rain expectations and shifted the heavier band farther south. This still has over 1/2 inch of rain through Central Maryland and nearly 1 inch farther south.
7 Day Forecast
After the wind storm, temps will cool tomorrow. The storm track will bring heavy rain on Friday, then clear out for the weekend as temps return to average levels.
There is no arctic air in sight for the next week.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
