January 24 Morning Flurries MD Polar Bear Super Plunge And Mild Air On The Way
January 24, 2025
Friday Morning Report
Today starts cold again with flurries and snow showers on radar. This is with a front that will kick up some winds and one last push of colder air for tonight. The snow may coat the ground in most spots, but nothing major.
Today is also the Maryland Polar Bear Super Plunge. I will be part of Team Faith in the Flakes, which will consist of 54 people jumping in the icy Chesapeake Bay once an hour for 24 hours to raise money for the Maryland Special Olympics. More on the weather below.
This weekend will start windy, but finally, a push of mild air will bring us close to the 40s by Sunday and Monday. There are no major winter events for the week ahead, but we still have half of winter in front of us.

Polar Bear Plunge Weather
The Maryland Super Plunge is a 24-hour event with one plunge in the Chesapeake Bay every hour.
This is my friend and Special Olympics Athlete, Danielle…. My inspiration… She joined me for one of them last year.
Yes, it is both VERY COLD AND ICY!
The photo from yesterday showed ice building along the shore of Sandy Point State Park.
Just to the left, the bay is more than 90% covered (to the north and flowing southward.)
The event is going as scheduled. There are safety precautions and no one is being forced to go all the way in. In fact, plungers can just walk in to get their feet wet.
I will go in and judge how deep I go and how often. I will keep my head dry since it is harder to dry and stay warm in between.
Water Temperature was 33F…
My Forecast … There will be a breeze and slight wind chill today.

This is my second year doing 24 plunges in 24 hours. It starts this morning,,,
Even if ice is on Sandy Point Beach at the plunge, organizers assured me it will be on schedule.

Snapshot Wednesday Night
Snow across the Great Lakes will try to push east and break up. This is the next push of colder air, but nothing extreme.
NOAA Temperature Outlook: Days 8 to 14
Over the next two weeks, nothing seems extreme. This trend to average will be mixed with both warm and cold periods. That is all that can be assured. Any specific storm ideas beyond seven days are purely guesswork, and I will not do that here.
7 Day Forecast
Temperatures will modify to freezing this weekend and reach the 40s as soon as Sunday afternoon.
A push of mild air early next week will last a couple of days, and then we will see how the next surge of cold air behaves.
At this point, Wednesday’s rain or snow looks light, and Thursday brings colder winds with flurries or snow showers.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
