Winter Storm Warning For The Outer Banks And Extreme Cold By Morning
Tuesday January 21 2025
Afternoon Update
The snowstorm crossing the Gulf Coast States is truly historic. For many areas this will be the most snow since February 14, 1895. Yes, 130 years ago! In many places, this will end up the most snow on record.
Heavy snow hit Houston through New Orleans and the Florida panhandle. The were the first ever Blizzard Warnings along the Louisiana coast, and the snow is moving up through the Southeast US into The Mid Atlantic. In this report I will focus more on the Winter Storm Warning the includes The Outer Banks of North Carolina and Norfolk VA. However, I wanted to show you the pics of the day in case you missed them:

Report of 9.5 inches of snow is the most since Feb 14-15 1895 when 8 inches fell.
Houston Area Snow
Nurse Amanda Boyles transplanted from Maryland mentioned her hospital was on disaster lockdown.
Houston has reported 3 inches of snow today.

Afternoon Surface Weather
The Low Pressure was located deep in the Gulf, with the arctic air plunging behind it. The 20s reached the Gulf coast and even colder air will follow behind it.
This storm was so special, NOAA flew hurricane hunter flights in to it for additional data.

Snow Total POTENTIAL Forecast
I used the Kuchera Method to account for the very cold air. So the flakes will be fluffed up and blow around in the wind.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
