Wednesday Morning Report

Happy New Year and NEW weather pattern. This latest storm exploded last night with severe thunderstorms and hail across Central Maryland through to the beaches. This energy was a signal of the pattern change now represented by very strong and cold winds.

A wind advisory is in place today for gusts of up to 50 mph. As temps drop, we will need to focus on the Wind Chill and the danger of being outside for long periods of time. There is also a Winter Storm Warning for the high mountains. This will affect travel as stickage and high accumulation will develop today and continue through tomorrow.

Snow will arrive for metro areas on Friday in a light version, with a moderate accumulation event more likely on Monday.

The continued discussion about this Arctic Outbreak is because it will be the most robust winter pattern we have seen in decades. The chance for cold and winter storms will last most of the month.

Let’s take a look.

This storm is a Wind Machine, and we are just getting started. The colder air is flowing in with more reinforcements over the next few days from deep in Canada.

Snow showers will develop across the Great Lakes and expand into the high mountains of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia.

Friday

The energy to spread some of the Lake Effect Snow over the mountains supports bringing snow showers or light snow into metro areas later in the day. This may be enough for a coating.

NEXT WEEK STORM

ECMWF Model

This model is leading the charge… remaining consistent with the expected snow track, while other models have now followed to catch up.

This product is bringing in moderate snow Monday morning, while the GFS and Canadian now have snow back in their plots… but later in the day.

This is still subject to refining, and I do not believe in snow totals this far out… But it’s more likely that many areas get at least their first inch of snow and then some…

It is 5 days away. By Friday, I feel more comfortable giving suggested totals.

European Model 7 PM Sunday to 7 PM Monday

This system swings through quickly and (at this time) shows more snow south of Baltimore.

OFTEN weather systems end up verifying farther north than earlier forecast tracks… so Central Maryland and Southern PA are still in play for the bulk of the event… and why I use caution not to give snow amounts yet.

This is the fastest arrival time and pulses heavier snow South of Baltimore.

GFS Model Snapshot: Monday Afternoon

This is later with the arrival and a little less robust with moderate snow. The bulk is south of Baltimore.

Canadian GEM Model Snapshot: Monday Afternoon

This is also later in the day and lighter with the precipitation…. but also has more snow south of Baltimore.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.  There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
