August 27 Turning Very Hot With Poor Air Quality

Morning Report
If you missed summer weather, it is definitely back! Yesterday brought Baltimore its first 90-degree day in 16 days. It was last in the 90s on August 9. Now, we may be setting our sites on 100ºF, either on the thermometer or heat index.
A little fog this morning may be a signal of the higher humidity. It will burn off but light winds are allowing the pollution to build.
High heat and poor air quality areas are expanding today. Tomorrow will be the worst of it, and then there will be a break with showers and storms.
The holiday weekend will start cool, with an east wind, so ocean getaways may be affected. Then, more showers and storms over the Labor Day weekend will bring back a reality check early next week.
Here is the breakdown of daily high temps in Baltimore so far this month.
- 100s = 2
- 90s = 5
- 80s = 16
- 70s = 3
As we look ahead to the hot week, let’s compare it to historic heat waves that have NOT been challenged for more than half a century.
1968 Record Heat Wave
23rd = 98ºF
24th = 98ºF
25th = 97ºF
1948 Record Heat Wave
26th = 101ºF
27th = 102ºF
28th = 101ºF
1953 Record Heat Wave
29th = 100ºF
30th = 101ºF
31st = 102ºF

Weather Alerts
Heat Advisories in Southern PA with an Excessive Heat Alert around Philadelphia. The light winds are allowing pollution to build in metro areas. That is why the air quality alerts have been issued.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
