Monday, June 9 Afternoon Update

The last pieces of energy in this pattern will be passing through our region this evening through Tuesday morning. Like the last few events, there is a timing of afternoon heating and upper-level energy tonight that will lead to a pulsing of thunderstorms later today through the overnight hours.

This is not going to impact all of our region the same way. The focus will start in the Maryland mountains and then track through parts of North-Central Maryland near and north of Baltimore into Southern Pennsylvania between 10 PM and 2 AM.

Flood Watch

The bulk of the energy will be in the Ohio Valley and the mountains, and the heavy rain over sensitive areas has prompted a Flood Watch in the Maryland Mountains between Cumberland and Hagerstown, then southward through Winchester in Virginia, where 1 to 3 inches of rain may fall.

Why Is This Happening?

Wind Forecast Monday Evening

If we look at the short-range forecast this evening, the wind direction helps tell the story. A Southeast Wind brings in moisture from the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay. This moisture rides upslope into higher elevations and helps ENHANCE cloud development and storm formation.

Radar Snapshot Monday Evening

The storm cells are expected to move in FROM The West, which is the opposite of the surface wind. That convergence will increase the rising air and perhaps some rotation.

These storms will lose some punch but remain strong as they pass across North Central Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania between 10 PM and 2 AM. See the timeline below.

Alerts To Consider:

A WATCH will be issued when there is a greater POTENTIAL for severe storms. This will list counties and cover a 4 to 6-hour time window.

A WARNING will be issued when A STORM FORMS AND IS BEING TRACKED! This will list towns in the path and usually gives a 45-minute window.

Radar Simulation 6 PM Mon to 8 AM Tuesday

Thunderstorms will develop and cross near and north of Baltimore close to midnight. There will be a second impulse of showers and storms that is expected around sunrise. This will move out early in the morning and give way to clearing for the afternoon.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.  There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
