Wildfire Smoke Returning Red Sun Alert For Monday Sunset AND Tuesday Sunrise
Monday Afternoon, June 2
You may have noticed the haze building back in this afternoon, and if you are like me, you see the sense of irony. It looks like it should be hot and humid, but it’s actually cool and comfortable. The low this morning in Baltimore at BWI was 48F, just 4 degrees from tying the record low. This afternoon remains cooler than average, thanks to a light wind FROM the northwest.
That same wind direction has helped bring smoke from over 180 wildfires in Central Canada.
We had that haze build in on Sunday, making for eerie scenes like this:
Monday Afternoon Surface Weather
Thankfully, the sky cleared overnight. Unfortunately, there is a lot more where that came from. This afternoon, the bulk of the smoke was located over the Great Lakes. High Pressure will help to continue to bring more smoke our way with the potential for a band of very thick upper-level smoke arriving by sunrise.
The upside is that it will make for vivid colors at sunset and sunrise. There may be an orange or red orb that you can view with the naked eye (briefly). I will show some examples below.
While the majority of the dust and ash particles are high in the atmosphere, when they are very thick, they can settle to the surface. This can give a scent of smoke and affect people with sensitive breathing issues.

Deceiving Forecast: Cloud Cover
You may see a forecast for a clear sky on your weather app because it shows little to no cloud cover. The smoke factor is not included. However, I expect your weather source will adjust to begin to account for this.
My Expectations:
The smoke will affect us on Tuesday and Wednesday at least. Something to consider, even though we will be warming up, and you may want to spend more time outside. This is not new, as we have experienced this a few times over recent years. Even if you are healthy and exercise a lot, conditions like this can affect your breathing. I recall the struggle with burning eyes and coughing while watching my son’s baseball team during a similar event in 2022. Most of the people on the field felt some level of discomfort.

David Sites, I believe,e on the Severn River or a nearby waterway in Anne Arundel County.
Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Two photos from Laura Elizabeth. I could not decide which one to share, so I chose both.
This first one is my favorite, with the framing and Heron flying low along the water.
This close-up with the solar glow enhancing the support tower of the bridge is also pretty special.
Hagerstown Maryland
He calls himself BigMeat on Twitter. The contrast of the mountains has a different ‘smokey’ feel.
Codorus State Park in Hanover, PA
Ellen Meissner captured the reflection ripples on the water and rising steam fog.
Cool and Ken COLD!
FORECAST
TUESDAY
This is expected to be a sunny day, but we need to monitor the smoke plume that I expect will be an issue through Wednesday.
Morning Low Temperatures
Afternoon Temperatures
LOOKING AHEAD
Jet Stream: Monday Afternoon to Thursday Afternoon
As a Ridge builds along the East Coast, we will get the return flow FROM the Southwest. This will pump in warmer air.
Snapshot Thursday
Finally, a taste of summer with temps near 90°F. This will increase the humidity as well.
Storm Forecast: Thursday Morning to Sunday Afternoon
A slow-moving cold front will be to our west and north, possibly bringing a chance of late storms on Friday.
The better chance will be Saturday afternoon and evening, followed by cooler winds on Sunday.
Saturday Evening
This will not be a washout day, but plan for a disruption to afternoon or evening plans due to potential thunderstorms.
7 Day Forecast
Summer Heat For The Middle Of The Week
The chance for thunderstorms late Friday and Saturday will NOT be all-day events.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
