June 1 We Cleared The Sky For Northern Lights And Canadian Wildfire Smoke
Sunday, June 1 2025
This new month is the start of Meteorological Summer AND the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Neither is showing itself yet, but the heat may try by the end of the week.
The storm has moved away, and with the sky clearing overnight, the early arrival of the Northern Lights was visible in Maryland. A major G4 Solar Storm arrived early this morning, and there will be more viewing opportunities tonight.
I was able to gather a collection of the early morning sky show in this post. Thanks to all who shared.
Aurora Forecast Tonight
The G4 Solar Storm has already produced a Kp Index = 8, and it is forecast to continue tonight as well. If so, the visible line for the Northern Lights can reach the Mid Atlantic. It may be captured easily on near mobile phones all the way into the Southern US. This is similar to the events of last October and last May.
Planetary Kp Index
Kp 7 is marginal, but Kp 8 offers a strong chance to view the Northern Lights in the Mid-Atlantic states.
Wildfire Smoke Forecast
HRRR Model 8 AM to 8 PM
The north wind is keeping us cool AND allowing wildfire smoke to track across the Great Lakes and Midwest into the Mid-Atlantic. This was evident in the morning sunrise and may turn the sky hazy today.
Afternoon Snapshot
Clouds will develop today and mix with a hazy backdrop at times. This may also help produce a vivid sunset.
Rainfall Update
Before we get to that, I want to wrap up the May Rainfall. Baltimore has been in a drought since last year. For the first time this year, the rain for the month exceeded the average.
- May ‘Monthly Total” = 6.85”
- Normal May Total To Date = 3.83”
- NET GAIN +3.00”
Rainfall Deficit at BWI
- Ending 2024 = -8.00”
- Since Jan 1 = -1.01”
- We are STILL DOWN -9.01” INCLUDING LAST YEAR

Morning Surface Weather
With the Nor’easter departing, there is still a wide flow of air from the North. This keeps us cooler than average and brings in wildfire smoke from Canada.
Cloud Forecast 8 AM to 8 PM
This cool air will allow daytime heating to build a partly to mostly cloudy sky at times. This may mix with a backdrop of smoke haze as well.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
