May 14 Flooding And Storm Video Plus Record Rain Fell In Baltimore And More Forecast
Wednesday May 14, 2025
This morning starts with areas of mist, fog, and coastal flooding! Some new areas of thunderstorms have developed close to sunrise in the Northern Chesapeake Bay! The combination of heavy rain, an easterly wind from the Bay, and the full moon has helped to raise water levels in urban areas of Baltimore, Annapolis, and along the Western Shore of the Chesapeake.

Record rainfall was observed in Baltimore overnight, in addition to the historic flooding in Western Maryland. Pop-up thunderstorms today and through Saturday are forecast to bring more rain.
Flood Warnings
Yesterday brought historic flooding to the mountain towns of Western Maryland. Among the hardest hit were Cumberland, LaVale, and Westernport. A persistent flow or training of heavy rain was funneled down the mountains, leading to rapidly rising water.

Swift Water Rescue
Over 100 people were evacuated from Westernport Elementary School as Swift Water Rescue Units from all over the state raced in to help.
Record Rainfall In Baltimore
But heavy rain also developed over Central Maryland late. There was a burst of thunderous activity over Baltimore’s BWI with 2.28”. This was the heaviest rain since the remains of Tropical Storm Debby in August last year.
This cut the deficit for the year in half, but there is still a deficit of more than 10 inches since all of last year as well.

Sheesh… rain tonight brought with it a random lighting strike. It was a few miles away, but sounded and felt like one of those positive bolts you hear about. Sounded like a bomb going off – shook the house, but again was a few miles away. #mdwx #thunderstorm #lightning pic.twitter.com/EierJ69Fcd

Low Pressure and the unstable setup over the Mid-Atlantic will help another round of Thunderstorms develop today. The focus may be mid-afternoon through tonight, and the flow will be from South to North, which could flow over the same areas with multiple storms.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
