May 8 Weather Developing Thunderstorms Mid Afternoon And Evening Then Cooler Rain Tomorrow And Nicer Mothers Day Weekend
Thursday, May 8, 2025
Today, we get back into another round of rain, and it is still very much needed. The drought conditions have Baltimore down more than 12 inches since last year. A new drought map will be issued today, which may help you accept this forecast.
Thunderstorms will begin to develop after 2 PM with the heating of the day, and will become more widespread this evening and night.
The overall pattern turns cool with a broader reach of rain on Friday.
Saturday, we will get clearing, and then we will have a full-on sunny Mother’s Day.
Drought Reminder
The heavy rain did not hit everyone. Baltimore only got 0.07” and is still in a deep hole since last year.
Rainfall Deficit at BWI
- Ending 2024 = -8.00”
- Since Jan 1 = -4.47”
- We are DOWN -12.47” including last year

Surface Weather
The combination of a warm and humid air flow from the south AND the cooler air from the Upper Level Low to our north will help develop thunderstorms and expand the rain later today and tonight.
NOAA Severe Storm Risk
Thunderstorms will build across Virginia into Central Maryland. This is a low level 1 for any severe threat—just heavy downpours.

Showers will develop after 2 PM, becoming more widespread through the evening and night.
We may see more action than shown here… This is a good tool for the expansion and movement to the Northeast.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
