Thursday Evening Rain And Storm Timeline
March 20 2025
Thursday Afternoon Update
Spring is about to do its thing! It may not seem like it, but the relatively quiet cold front is about to get more active this evening. A Meso-Low Pressure is expected to develop on the front over Central Maryland and this circulation will enhance the rain as it rapidly develops heading into the Northeast.
This looks like rapid development around I-95 between 5 and 6 PM then lasting through tonight.
This report is a quick look at the system that may drop a quick 1/2 inch of rain or more around metro areas and through Delmarva.
Compare the Live Radar below to the forecast simulation.
Temperatures at 4 PM
This helps show the contrast of air masses as cooler 40s are bumping into the lower 70s.
Afternoon Surface Weather
The Meso-Low Pressure is developing in North Carolina with a cluster of heavier rain into Southern Virginia. This rain will ride north on a low-level jet and enhance the rain into Maryland in just a few hours, as shown in the model plot below.
Quick Storm Progress
Thursday Afternoon to Friday Morning
Here in the Mid-Atlantic, this means the front will slow down for a few hours, with rain growing to locally heavy downpours and pockets of lightning and thunder. There is a small chance one of these cells will reach severe limits, with strong wind gusts and local flooding.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
