March 9 Time Change Brings Later Sunset But Same Old Dry Wind And Fire Risk
March 9, 2025
Sunday Morning Report
The time change has a new feel to the air, and we will get to see it today with dull sunshine and sunset AFTER 7 PM. The downside is a growing problem with our drought.
Due to dry conditions on the ground, low humidity, and high winds, the National Weather Service has posted an Elevated Risk for Rapid Fire Spread! This means any brush fire can rapidly get out of control.
We had this last weekend, AND just yesterday, a large fire erupted on Long Island, NY. This was captured on video and seen on Doppler Radar.

FIRE RISK
Message from NWS:
…ELEVATED THREAT FOR RAPID FIRE SPREAD THIS AFTERNOON…
The combination of west winds gusting 20 to 30 mph, relative humidity falling to 20 to 30 percent, and drying fine fuels this afternoon will lead to an elevated threat for rapid fire spread. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn, use extreme caution since fires can increasingly escalate under these conditions.

Baltimore Sunrise/Sunset Times:
- Sunset Sunday = 7:08 PM
- Monday: Sunrise 7:25 AM; Sunset 7:09 PM
Next week, we get a big warm-up that should bring a few days into the 70s! Again,… remaining dry.
DROUGHT UPDATE
The longer days and higher sun angle help to evaporate the soil quicker. This is more noticeable when our rain events are few and far between. With no rain for at least another 5 or 6 days, our deficit will continue to grow and the ground will get more dry.

Morning Surface Weather
A cold front produced showers overnight and fresh snow/rain in the high mountains. Residual clouds are around this morning as winds will gust again. They will be chilly from the Northwest up to 35 mph.
The southern storm will continue to track south and miss us. As I mentioned a few days ago… the GFS Model was wrong and there will not be an east coast snowstorm this weekend.
We have a warm up on the way and no organized rain in sight for the next week.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
