February 6 Ice Update And Thawing: Next Ice Saturday Evening And Snow Tuesday
February 6, 2025
Thursday Report
There is a lot to cover this morning. The ice is thick and dangerous for some, marginal in other places, and just wet further south and near the water. We will explore and the thaw will not be simple, but it will happen this morning.
My Morning Ice
We have another freezing rain event Saturday evening AND then snow expected Tuesday. That Polar Vortex is forecast to split bringing more cold next weekend. So it will be busy AND NOT THE SAME impact across our region. I am trying to help navigate expectations.

7 AM Doppler Radar
Ice Storm Alerts
Some areas have begun to thaw or have mostly wet roads. There are still pockets of ice, and it is more likely to be icy on cars and elevated surfaces/steps/decks. Please BE CAREFUL. It may be wet by you, but icy around the corner.
Morning Ice Notes
There is never a perfect forecast but this ice event did play out mostly as expected. The most challenging things have been put on display this morning, especially in Central Maryland and the wide area surrounding Baltimore.
The thaw has begun near the water.
Some areas have wet roads, but there is ice on cars, trees, and maybe your steps and elevated deck.
Driving can quickly turn wet to icy on an overpass, bridge, or around a corner.
Walking may be more icy where the afternoon had shade (it’s colder).
Maryland Public Schools are County-Wide, so a call for delay or closing is based on THE WORST WEATHER IN THE COUNTY! Some areas may be wet, and it seems like a BUST, but the SAME COUNTY can be very icy just one or two towns away.
DROUGHT UPDATE
Rainfall Deficit at BWI
Ending 2024 = -8.00″, since Jan 1 = -1.96
So we are down -9.96″, including last year!

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
