January 23 Cold Morning Then Turning Mild This Weekend
January 23, 2025
Thursday Morning Report
The core of the cold air is moving away but is still being felt this morning. If you had clouds yesterday from that historic southern snowstorm, then this morning might be colder for your area. The places that were clear had already bottomed out however this morning may be similar.
Today will have sunshine and lighter winds, allowing temperatures to get close to freezing in the cities. However, the ice is building on the Chesapeake Bay. I was there and took photos to show you.
This weekend will start windy, but finally, a push of mild air will bring us close to the 40s by Sunday and Monday. There are no major winter events for the week ahead, but we still have half of winter in front of us.
Ice On The Chesapeake
I visited Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD. This is the location for the Polo Bear Plunge for MD Special Olympics. I will be doing the 24 Hour Super Plunge here starting on Friday morning
Maryland Special Olympics Super Plunge
This is my second year doing 24 plunges in 24 hours. It starts this Friday.
Even if ice is on Sandy Point Beach at the plunge sight, organizers assured me it will be on schedule.

Local Morning Temperatures
The clear sky and light wind have allowed many areas to get even colder than yesterday. However, the air mass itself has pushed the core of the cold away. So areas that were clear and under deep snowpack yesterday may have temps near or not as cold… but those that were cloudy yesterday morning are likely to be colder.
BWI was at 7F, colder than the morning low of 10F yesterday.
York, PA, was -6F, but yesterday, it bottomed out at -15F. Yes, that was the actual reading on their thermometer.

Snowfall Over The Last 2 Weeks
The band of Gulf Coast snow has been a once-in-a-lifetime event.
I am showing this time window because there is still a fresh snowpack to the north.
This included:
- All-time records for the state of Florida: Milton = 9.8 inches.
- New Orleans had 10 inches, breaking the old record of 2.7” set in 1963.
- Southern Louisiana had the first Blizzard Warning ever issued.
Satellite: True Color Noon EST Wednesday
Where the sky was clear, the satellite was able to identify the deep snow cover on the ground.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
