January 9 Weather Winter Storm Warning For Southern Storm And LA Fire Update
January 9 2025
Thursday Morning Report
The new winter storm is expanding snow and ice into Texas this morning. That will be a major travel impact across the Southern US for the next three days. We get clipped by that system with light snow on Saturday morning. I have my first call for snowfall below.
Before we get to that, very strong winds will gust to 40 mph today. Combined with the cold air, wind chills will be a top factor for our weather.
LA Fire Update As of this morning:
- Palisades Fire (largest): Over 17,000 acres burned.
- Wind Gusts to 50 mph today.
- 0% Contained.
- Air Quality is very poor: Lots of toxic materials are part of the fires.
PSA: Fake California Fire
The Hollywood Sign was NOT ON FIRE last night. I actually shared an image sent from a friend, only to find out I can’t trust that source anymore.
This was my follow-up to let you know there are many valid but also AI-generated images. Please make sure you know your source.
As horrific as this is, we do not need any exaggeration.

Saturday:
I am sticking with the European Model and the lighter snow solution. This is based on a storm that will track a little farther south.

ECWMF Model
This is the most likely solution.
GFS Model
This model has a stronger system tracking farther north and, I believe, has the same bias as it did with the last event.
My Call For Snowfall
This will be a morning event but may last into the early afternoon.
Higher snow totals will be across the same areas that got over 6 inches of snow on Monday.
This will be gone by the Ravens home playoff game at night.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
