January 4 Perihelion Day Cold Ravens Game Weather And Winter Storm Watch
January 4 2025
Saturday Morning Report
I know the attention is on the Winter Storm we expect to hit on Monday, but I needed to get this full forecast report out this morning as well.
Friday Snow Recap:
The event on Friday did verify with a dusting to 1 inch across the Maryland and PA line, but Central Maryland saw a lull.
BWI reported 0.05” of snow. That is just over a dusting, but it is the first measurable snow of the year for that reporting station.
Southern Maryland got the BURST with a squall and Thundersnow. The mountains also did verify the original snow forecast for higher amounts.

TODAY
It will be cold today, and wind chills will be in the 10s for the Ravens Game in Baltimore. The cold air is established for the storm to arrive in our region after midnight on Sunday night. It will be snowing by daybreak and for most of the day. The storm will impact schools and travel. We must also consider the wide range of computer guidance and remain conservative to allow for the track to shift the heavy snow and ice in either direction.
Perihelion Day
Today is Perihelion Day when Earth is closest to the sun during its annual orbit. Yes, it is ironic that in winter, we are 3 million miles closer to the sun and still cold. The 23.5° tilt of the pole plays a larger role in how much energy we get from the sun.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
