Snow Timeline Friday For Winter Weather Advisory
Friday, January 3 2025
A burst of snow will cross Central Maryland Friday afternoon and evening with brief snow squalls. This will quickly coat the ground and maybe bring 1/2 inch of snow within an hour.
The timing has promoted many area schools to close early. Even though most areas in the path can expect a coating to 1 inch of snow, this may be enough to cause travel problems and the risk for kids on buses is too much.
This report has the latest forecast timeline from the HRRR Model. This is a High Resolution that refreshes every hour.
It may not be perfect, but it is the best guide for how this may play out.
Winter Weather Advisory
Southern PA Counties will get the same snow without the advisory (Adams, York, Lancaster).
Schools called in Maryland
- 2 Hours Early: Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick and Washington County
- 90 Early: Howard County
- Queen Anne’s Co: Tier One: Noon; Tier Two: 1 PM
Temperatures At Noon
The concern is that the initial snow may melt, but the ground will chill quickly. Then, as shown below, the temperatures will drop below freezing.
Weather Set Up At Noon
A strong cold front is shown here, but there is a vigorous circulation developing that shows up on the forecast modeling below. This is expected to cross over Baltimore and enhance the snow once it reaches the Chesapeake Bay.

Temperatures
The freezing line will cross metro areas around I-95. Anything wet this evening will have a chance to freeze within a few hours.
Snow Forecast
This is LESS than the 1 to 2 inches I showed last night. This is a key point to consider as we look towards the larger storm next Monday.
I will have a full report and my first snow call for the next storm this evening.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
