December 27 A Wet Weekend With Fog Rain And Later Warm Up
December 27, 2024
Friday Morning Report
The weather pattern will warm up before the anticipation of a big cool-down in early January. With this adjustment, cold air will first need to be pushed out, and it might take a little time and a lot of effort.
The dual storm system this weekend will bump into the cold air, likely resulting in widespread fog and two main periods of rain: Saturday morning and later on Sunday. Then, as the warm air arrives, we may get a couple of days close to 60F, with one more rain event on New Year’s Eve. The flip to colder air will begin to show up one week from now… and then dominate January.
It’s too early to detail a specific snowstorm, but the pattern supports it in January. Let’s take a look.

Morning Surface Weather
This storm system has been responsible for severe storms and a tornado outbreak from Texas into Louisiana. This energy will feed into heavy rain moving north.
However, there is a wedge of cold air (damming) banked up east of the mountains here in the Mid-Atlantic that will be slow to move.
As the moisture rides over it, fog is likely to develop and expand… especially as the rain arrives on Saturday.
Local Morning Temperatures
Cold air solidly in place will hold again.
Afternoon Temperatures
Radar Simulation: 7 PM Friday to 7 AM Saturday
Rain moves in overnight.
SATURDAY DECEMBER 28

Afternoon Temperatures
The cold air wedge remains banked up against the mountains, which is why, along with the rain, we may see widespread fog.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
