December 11 Weather Alerts For Stormy Day Starts With Warm Rain Ends Colder With Snow Burst Inland
December 11, 2024
Wednesday Morning Report
We have a very busy weather day as this strong storm develops across our region. Rain is already in place and will be heavy at times. The winds will shift during the day, resulting in falling temps this afternoon and tonight.
The rain will end as snow inland for a few hours. For many, temps will remain above freezing, but a slushy coating is possible this evening. Temps continue to drop below freezing in these inland areas (that got a coating last week) and may turn icy overnight.
I want to do something different this morning. First, the alerts. Then, the simulations for radar and winds, followed by snapshots of key time frames.
Weather Alerts Today
- Dense Fog Advisory for Baltimore Metro Areas
- Wind Advisory for Eastern Shore: Gusts to 50 mph
- Winter Weather Advisory for snow 2 to 4 inches in the high mountains
Wind Forecast: 7 AM to 10 PM
Key time frame snapshots below
Radar Simulation: 7 AM to 10 PM
Key time frame snapshots below
Heavy rain will end with that snow burst inland and accumulating snow in the mountains.

Morning Surface Weather
The storm is developing and will get stronger. Very fast winds at the jet stream level, up to 150 mph, will prime the event.
Surface warming this morning in the 60s with heavy rain will then turn to colder winds this afternoon.
Snow is expected to accumulate in the mountains.
The strong winds will be due to the intensifying storm, and cold air will flow in for a few days.
Snapshot Key Times
Reminder that the NAM 3Km model error often has the precipitation arrive and depart an hour or two later than shown… the cold/freezing air may arrive an hour or two later than shown.

Rainfall Total POTENTIAL
Even if we get 1 to 2 inches of rain, this is a small dent in the larger drought, which is at just over an 8-inch deficit.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
