November 23 Windy Today Then Brief Warm Up Ahead Of Thanksgiving Winter Storm
November 23, 2024
Saturday Morning Report
This first winter storm has moved through with a moderate amount of snow falling and even some stickage. It appears this played out well, with many seeing the snow, even a Trace was measured at BWI and Washington airports. Farther inland, there was some accumulation on the grass, AND the high totals in the mountains verified. I will have my Deep Creek Lake update and focus on the snow event later this morning.
Today will bring strong winds. Gusts to 35 mph, even with milder air, will make it feel uncomfortable. Sunday and Monday will improve, then we will watch for more rain and perhaps a winter storm for the region on Thanksgiving, with the snow part inland.
Let’s take a look:
Morning Surface Weather
Our recent storm is moving away and bringing much-needed rain to Boston and New England. The inland snow is turning to rain as well, as it ends with the loss of the upper-level cold support.
Chilly air has pushed all the way to Florida with morning temps in the 40s as far south as Orlando.
Strong winds will flow in today, leading the path for a return of mild air for a few days.
Radar Simulation 7 AM to 7 PM
The snow in the mountains has been changing to rain, and it will remain wet with drizzle and showers all day.
Farther east should remain dry.
Wind Forecast 8 AM to Midnight
A strong burst of airflow will peak mid-afternoon.
1 PM Snapshot
Winds will gust to 35 mph.
1 PM Temperatures
This may be the peak of the day, as the strong winds may drop the temps for the rest of the afternoon.

Looking Ahead:
Thanksgiving Storm? Rain will move through on Tuesday, then set up for a larger storm on Thursday and Friday.
Snapshots
Tuesday
Periods of rain.
Thanksgiving Day
Rain will develop and hold chilly air for the big cities and main metro areas. Inland snow is currently a ‘suggestion.’ I would NOT lock in the line or totals this early. Just anticipate travel impacts across the mountains.
Friday Morning
Heavy rain will end in the Mid-Atlantic by noon but continue for New York and New England.
Interior mountains may get heavy snowfall.
NOAA Temperature Outlook
COLDER
This pattern will reestablish itself into December. Here is the 8 to 14 Day map showing continued cold across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US.
7 Day Forecast
Briefly mild early next week. The next storm in view may have a large impact between Thanksgiving and the big shopping day, Black Friday.
Heavy rain for the cities and possibly heavy snow for the interior mountains.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
