October 28 Starting Near Freezing Then Near 80 On Halloween And Some Rain In Sight
October 28, 2024
Monday Morning Report
There is no doubt we are in a drought! The rainfall has been almost nonexistent since October 1. There was barely any on the 2nd and 4th, so essentially, it has been 4 weeks, and the next chance may be the end of this week.
The big story will be the temperatures. This morning, we have a Freeze Warning, and temperatures have dropped below 32ºF from Baltimore to Salisbury… remaining mild closer to the water.
The return flow around High Pressure will pump in warmer temps this week, so the 70s may arrive tomorrow and then become common. Some areas are expected to hit the 80s on Halloween, and then we cool back for yet another weekend.

Morning Surface Weather
A big swing of temps will take us from near freezing to the 60s today, then 70s get close tomorrow and 80s on Halloween.
We remain dry until maybe Friday.

Drought Update
Baltimore only recorded significant rain on October 1. Barely measurable on the 2nd and a trace on the 4th. So it has been about 4 weeks since we had rain:
- Oct 1 = 0.35”
- Oct 2 = 0.01
- Oct 3 = 0.00
- Oct 4 – Trace…
Baltimore Stats:

TUESDAY OCTOBER 29

Afternoon High
Jet Stream Animation: Tuesday to Thursday
A large ridge will dominate the Eastern US this week. That keeps us very warm and still very dry!
Thursday: Halloween
The highest temps of this stretch are expected just in time for Trick or Treaters.
Thursday Night to Saturday Morning
The next cold front will arrive to start November with a chance of rain on Friday.
Closer Look
This cold front is looking a little more active and has a better chance of rain or even a thunderstorm. This will not be a drought buster, but anything will help.
LOOKING AHEAD
Friday, Nov 1 to Friday, Nov 8
It may be another week until we get a pattern change back to colder and more seasonable weather.
7 Day Forecast
Big swing from this morning’s freeze to near 80ºF on Halloween. There is a decent chance for brief rain with the cold front Friday, then colder next weekend.
Note: There was a record heat wave in 1946 that we may fall just short of this year… The closest will be on Halloween.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
