September 5 Briefly Warmer Then Ocean Winds Cool Again Ahead Of Rain Saturday
Thursday, September 5 2024
Morning Report
We are about to turn the corner a little from this chilly spell. Yesterday, the high temperature at Baltimore’s BWI was 78ºF, 5 degrees cooler than average. Contrast that with last year’s record heat wave. Four days in a row set records, as shown here.
Record Heat Wave of 2023 in Baltimore at BWI
- Sep 3 = 98ªF
- Sep 4 = 99ºF
- Sep 5 = 99ºF
- Sep 6 = 100ºF
Temperatures should recover close to 80ºF this afternoon, but they will still be below average. Winds will shift from the East on Friday to bring in more clouds and help feed the rain on Saturday. It will be cool, but next week is looking warmer back into the 80s.
Steam Fog: In Case You Missed This
As we enter Fall, chilly mornings over warmer water often produce fog. This is because the evaporation quickly condenses. This happened yesterday morning! Check out these photos and video over Lake Redman in York, PA, from Jay Ryan.

Morning Surface Weather
High Pressure is still in charge of our weather with a clear sky and cool temps. The Southeast US remains very wet with ongoing rain. Low Pressure will be developing and spreading north to start the weekend.
Afternoon Temperatures
It will be mostly sunny and perhaps slightly more humid. It will be comfortable, but you might notice the air is less ‘crisp.’

Looking Ahead:
Friday To Sunday Afternoon
We are still expecting rain, but the timing of the system is spreading out. The cold front may arrive later, and Low Pressure will pass farther south to the North Carolina coast. This is why the rain appears to be less than first suggested.
Snapshot Saturday
This may be the only day with rain next week, and the focus will be on the afternoon and evening.
7 Day Forecast
Ocean Winds bring in clouds and moisture tomorrow, feeding into the rain on Saturday. That should be the only wet day of the weekend…
Next week will try to warm back up closer to or slightly above average.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.
One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.
There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
