Friday Morning Update

Locally we have a quiet start to the Labor Day Weekend, but that will change with building humidity and storms.  However, the Atlantic is getting active with a new Tropical Storm for the first time in 60 days, ending the second longest mid season gap.  What is really interesting is that this is consistent with the other two years that did not have a named storm in August. More on that below.

Morning Surface Weather

High Pressure is dominating the Mid Atlantic and Northeast.  This provides a cool start, but sunshine will carry us to a warm finish. Add in a light easterly wind and the humidity will increase this weekend. Then we look to the west and that disturbance will build our way to end the weekend a little stormy.

Morning Temperatures

It is cool inland and farther west. Still mild around the water of the Chesapeake Bay

NEW: TROPICAL STORM DANIELLE

Almost exactly on schedule. We just tied the 3rd August with no named tropical storms in the Atlantic and now have a new named system. If you look at the other years, BOTH 1961 and 1997 had a storm named early in September that reached Major Hurricane Intensity.

It looks like this has a chance to match that.

National Hurricane Center

2 Day Outlook

Tropical Storm Danielle has 70 mph winds and will likely become a hurricane today. It will remain in the north central Atlantic.

There are two other systems that ‘have a chance’, but the odds seem to be slipping a little with development.

COMPARE TO THE  PAST

If you want a snowy winter, this is why you might want to look for in the rest of the tropical season.

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:

I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell.  It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

I do miss mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.

All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.

There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.

I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…

It’s part of my charm.
