Friday Morning Report

Storms erupted across metro Washington DC and Southern Maryland yesterday. This left a trail of wind damage and large hail reports between 1 and 1.5 inches. This included large hail in Crofton as the cluster crossed Rt 50, and yet another eruption in Dorchester County near Cambridge. They got late hail two weeks ago.

Storm Photos

In case you missed it, there has been plenty of lightning and cloud photos. Here is a sample of what I received.

Morning Set Up

Surface Weather

The cold front is not completely through the region. Clouds will be slow to clear, but we will get into the cooler air mass later today and this weekend. More sun later today to the west and north of Baltimore. More clouds near the beaches.

Tropical Storm Warnings are posted for Southern Florida. Alex is expected to be named today. More on that system below…

Tropical Outlook

The National Hurricane Center is likely to name Tropical Storm Alex today as this circulation moved farther into the open water. The Gulf of Mexico between Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula should provide fuel for organization before reaching Florida this weekend.

Forecast Map

Close Up Florida

This will be a quick mover crossing Florida on Saturday. This may only remain on land for 12 hours or so, then into the Atlantic Ocean.

East Coast View

Alex will NOT reach the Mid Atlantic. We can thank the current cold front for pushing this out to the open ocean. However, ripping waves and rip currents are likely into the middle of next week through Ocean City, MD.

A pleasant cool down tomorrow into the weekend.

The tropical weather will miss us, but may impact the waves on the local beaches.

*Disclaimer due to frequent questions:

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here you may have missed it:

I have dyslexia, and found out at my second year at Cornell.  I didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree, and being first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse.

All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.

There is no editor that can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline.

I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me…

It’s part of my charm.
